Steep Point, the westernmost point of Western Australia, is a perfect vantage point to see the magnificent Zuytdorp Cliffs, which rise some 170 meters above sea level.
Steep Point is also a mecca for fishermen, known to be one of the world’s most successful land-based fishing locations. Here fishermen use ballooning equipment to carry bait out into deeper water where gamefish can be found.
Many pelagic fish inhabit the waters off Steep Point including Spanish Mackerel, assorted Mackerel, Sailfish, Tuna, Cobia, Yellow Tailed Sea Kingfish, and monster Tailor, as well as great bottom fishing in the evenings.
The spectacular Zuytdorp Cliffs extend along the coast from Steep Point, all the way to Kalbarri but Steep Point makes for one of the best viewing spots along the coast. Watch out for the blowholes, which shoot sea spray some 20 – 30 feet into the air. The Zuytdorp Cliffs stretch for more than 200 kilometres. You can take one of several sightseeing cruises on offer to explore these magnificent cliffs. Alternatively, take a scenic flight along this stretch of the coastline for breathtaking views and ample photographic opportunities. Named after the Zuytdorp ship that was wrecked by the rugged coast in the early 1700s, the ship remains on the seabed near the cliffs.
Access is by four-wheel drive only and visitors are advised to exercise caution and bring their own drinking water and supplies.
The area around Steep Point is governed by the Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPAW). Entry to Steep Point costs $12 per car (up to 12 legally seated people).
